CORDA adopts latest NUTS 2021 to improve spatial data classification and search efficiency

CORDA is proud to announce a significant milestone in our commitment to facilitating efficient spatial data exploration and retrieval. We have recently upgraded our platform to utilize the latest version of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), the NUTS 2021-2024 classification, as provided by Eurostat.

At CORDA, we understand that the accuracy and relevance of spatial data are paramount for serving the needs of Copernicus Services and the broader geospatial community. By aligning our platform with the most up-to-date NUTS 2021 classification, we are taking a giant step towards ensuring that users have more accurate access to the most up-to-date geospatial information available.

Latest improvements of the CORDA platform

On March 7th, the latest release of the CORDA platform went live, bringing with it a host of new and improved features. This update has focused on optimising the user experience across the entire portal, with a particular emphasis on improving the exploration of reference datasets, which now boasts a more user-friendly design.

The improvements to usability have also extended to the search capabilities and the statistics section, with a consistent and simplistic design throughout the entire site. The new statistics provides a clear overview of the most relevant data on the thematic coverage and classification of European reference datasets for Copernicus services.

Additionally, and no less relevant, the CORDA platform has introduced a new section dedicated to Multi-Country Datasets, a substantial improvement that provides users with one-click access to the CORDA thematic multi-country datasets. This section is completed with the description of the methodology followed in CORDA for the creation of these specific datasets and links to relevant information, including data models and data dictionaries.

We are happy to announce that we have recently deployed a new release of CORDA.
This new release includes the following features and improvements:

Multi-country dataset downloading tool

As part of the new developments, CORDA offers an option for downloading data for multi-country datasets. Users are now able to download data with two possible options:

Drawing an area on the map. CORDA will download the data that is within the selected area.
By country. CORDA will download all the data for the selected country.

New multi-country datasets

The number of CORDA Multi-country datasets keeps growing, allowing end-users to access data with same structure for additional areas of Europe. The following countries have been recently included in the relating Multi-country datasets:

Buildings: FR
Standing Water: BG, HR, IE, ES, LV
Water Course: BG, IS, LV
Land Water Boundary: IS, UK
Wetland: HR

New data in CORDA

Apart from Multi-country, CORDA keeps growing in one of the most demanded themes: Orthoimagery. New datasets have been included for the following countries/regions:

FR: IRC with 0.5m resolution, 2015 to 2019 depending on the zone.
AL: resolution 0,08 m, years 2018 and 2019, scattered areas.
PT: 2018 images 0,25m resolution, continental area.
Basque Country (ES): 0,25m resolution,2019 images.

New Multi-country Datasets

Multi-country datasets for administrative units, hydrography, and buildings have been grouped in a single resource with a flattened simplified data model based on INSPIRE to facilitate quick data retrieval by Copernicus Services.

· Administrative Units multi-country dataset

The first version of the Administrative Units multi-country dataset contains data from 20 countries (AT, BE, BG, CY, CZ, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, LT, LU, MT, NL, PL, PT, RO, SI, SK).

· Buildings multi-country dataset

The first version of the Buildings multi-country dataset contains data from 4 countries (EE, LU, CZ, LT).

· Hydrography multi-country dataset

The first version of the hydrography multi-country dataset including Hydrography Watercourses, Wetlands, Land Water Boundaries and Standing Waters contains data from 7 countries (DE, AT, LU, BE, DK, EE, LT).

CORDA improves the Data Providers section

The Data Providers section has been improved in order to make the navigation more user-friendly. A pagination has been added to all the pages of this section making the page load faster. In this pages you could see at the bottom the nagigation control that will allow you to change between pages.

The existing table view (already working in the search) has also been implemented in the Data Providers section, allowing you to choose the one that fits your needs.

CORDA complies with the general data protection regulation (GDPR)

The general data protection regulation (GDPR) is applicable from 25 May 2018, 2 years after the EU agreed to a major reform of its data protection framework.

The regulation replaces the 20-year-old Directive 95/46/EC. By setting a global data protection standard, it will strengthen the EU internal market, benefiting both citizens and businesses.

The GDPR is going to give EU citizens more control over their own personal data, improving their security both online and offline.

CORDA keeps growing!

In order to provide access to spatial data information with the widest coverage, the inventory of services registered in CORDA continues growing. This week we have reached the figure of 6000 resources. These geospatial resources allow users to manage data from more than 2100 spatial datasets.

We continue working to improve the inclusion of both national and regional products.

New Orthoimagery View Service covering the whole territory of Belgium has been published and registered in CORDA, as well as Geographical Names.

Export spatial data services of a collection or a view to an ArcGIS MXD document.

A new downloading tool is available for the spatial data services included in a collection or user view. All the available WMS and WMTS services are included in the MXD document. This tool allows Copernicus Services to use CORDA services directly in a desktop software. Map documents are the most common way to persist and distribute maps and other cartographic information for data. The ArcMap document is compatible for ArcGIS 10.x software versions.

Improvements in export of spatial data services from a view or collection to a QGIS document.

The export tool has been improved in order to generate the documents more quickly. All the WMS and WMTS spatial data services from a view or collection are added to the document so it can be used in a desktop QGIS software. Also, all the WCS and WFS services from the view or collection are included in the map document if the QGIS format is selected.

Export spatial data services of a collection or a view to a CSV (comma-separated values) document.

A new format has been included for downloading collections and views, in order to obtain fast and complete lists of services. The downloaded CSV document contains links to all the spatial data services included in a collection/view. WMS, WMTS, WFS, WCS, KML, ArcGIS MapServer services and vector files are listed in the document, providing the user with a complete resource list which is ideal for desktop use.

Improvements in spatial search in order to have more accurate results.

The spatial search has been notably improved. The datasets of CORDA are now spatially associated to NUTS codes. This indexation allows users to obtain faster results. The results are also ordered, listing first the datasets that tightly match with the searched extension. This new sorting algorithm presents more accurate results to Copernicus Services, helping them identify the required datasets more quickly.

More than 1.000 datasets already registered in CORDA

The number of datasets registered in CORDA reached 1,030 last month. Each dataset has an average of 3 spatial data services, so the total number of spatial data services is now more than 3,000.

Approximately one third of the spatial data services are WMS, another third are downloadable files and the rest are other kind of resources like WFS, WCS, GDB, FTP, etc.
Datasets are mainly related with the INSPIRE themes: Administrative Units, Transport Networks, Elevation, Land Cover, Orthoimagery, Buildings, and Land Use.

Registering activity is currently focusing on: Geographical Names, Cadastral Parcels, Hydrography, Statistical Units, Population Distribution – Demography and Natural Risk Zones, in order to improve the needs of the Copernicus Services.

A new release of CORDA was launched at the beginning of July 2016. The new features and improvements are briefly described below.

Improved login and account management
A new option in the login page allows the user recovering a forgotten password.

Access for Data providers
Data providers can access now to the platform to review and validate their registered datasets. The portal includes a direct feedback form for data providers.

Improvements in dataset card
The registered datasets have been compiled in comprehensible cards. The dataset contact point is automatically extracted from the metadata file.

Related datasets
The user can navigate from one related dataset to another using the links in the dataset card.

Download views and collection
A new tool allows the user downloading views and collections into Quantum GIS project files (.qgs).

Video tutorials
The user can now take a look to video tutorials in the help page.

We have integrated fresh graphic styles in the layout and have improved the user experience, making it more seamless and intuitive.

New features and improvements in CORDA - March 2016

A new release of CORDA was launched at the beginning of March 2016. The new features and improvements are briefly described below.

Search by KML

A new spatial search feature has been included to enable search using Keyhole Mark-up Language (KML) files. KMLs allow users add specific geographic structures to the search.

Search by country

A new search tool has been implemented to allow searching by data provider country. It is recommended to combine this tool with spatial search to obtain more accurate results.

Overview map in dataset

The dataset details include now a little map with an overview of the extent of the dataset allowing users to see quickly the coverage of the dataset.

Improved thumbnails

Users can magnify the dataset thumbnail while exploring the results. With a mouse click the dataset thumbnail gets bigger.

Improved viewer

Legend and layers are visible in the preview viewer. The service layers can be enabled or disabled from the table of content. The viewer combines two or more layers into one single view.
Previsualization of WMTS and authenticated services is possible.

Updated help page

The Help page has been updated, new searching tools are explained in detail in the page.' Views' and 'Collections' concepts are introduced.

Latest added and/or modified datasets and spatial data services in the News page

The list of ten last added and/or modified datasets and spatial data services is displayed in the News page.

RSS News panel

A new web tool has been developed to include a RRS feeds in the News page.

Content Editor rating

All datasets have been rated by the content editor; the dataset detail includes a five star widget with the dataset evaluation.

User rating

Users can rate dataset with a like/dislike widget.

Public feedback centre

Provide feedback, request help when password is lost or send comments/suggestions using the Feedback tool.

CORDA at New Horizons for European and Global land monitoring Copernicus
